Lubos Soukup Quartet
International original modern jazz
Its leader, a composer and saxophonist, Lubos Soukup has been working for many years on creating a band that would achieve balance in sophisticated well-crafted compositions and warm emotional playing. According to the reviews and audience reactions, his quartet has succeeded in giving attractive and amusing performances while keeping the quality of the music high.
The band has incorporated elements from different musical styles, such as odd meters, Peruvian rhythms, a classical music rubato approach, or Czech folk melodies. You can also find some references to jazz legends like Wayne Shorter or Sonny Rollins in their music. The strong, almost telepathic, connection between the band members allows them to be daring and to build up complex improvisation solos and interplays.
The quartet first formed in 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The band has already released three albums — Beyond the Borders (2012), Through the Mirror (2013) a Země (The Earth, 2017). The last two albums were voted the best Czech jazz albums of the year in the annual music expert survey run by the Czech Jazz Radio. Through the Mirror won in 2013, Země won four years later.
The leader of several prize-winning jazz bands, Lubos Soukup, is one of the biggest talents on the Czech jazz scene. Although he is currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark, he regularly tours in the Czech Republic and other European countries to perform mostly his own music. In 2017, he became the recipient of the annual Danish Music Talent Award and accepted the prize from the hands of Miles Davis’ band player Marilyn Mazur. As a composer, he has written about 150 compositions and his music has been recorded on 8 albums.
Apart from the band leader, the quartet consists of the German pianist Christian Pabst, who brings fresh lyrical tones to Soukup’s compositions. The rhythm section is represented by two Danish musicians. The bassist Morten Haxholm has a lot of experience with playing with American jazz stars. He ensures that the foundation of the music is mature and solid. Morten Hæsum is currently one of the most sought-after drummers rising in the Danish jazz scene. His highly interactive and explosive playing brings out the best of his band-mates and animates the compositions.
